RUFUS SEWELL is one of Britain's most talented,
charismatic, and versatile actors. His combination of good looks,
self-deprecating wit, and courage in taking unexpected roles, makes him unique among his
peers. These pages will attempt to pay tribute to his work in theatre, film, and
television.
"What is most beautiful in virile men is something feminine; what is most beautiful
in feminine women is something masculine."
Susan Sontag
Against Interpretation, 1966

"....And its a journey that brings a superb
performance from Rufus Sewell: now spry, now frantic, now defeated, then quietly, movingly
resilient and always the heart of Stoppards fascinating play and Trevor Nunns
finely acted production."

Sir Trevor Nunn: Accepting Best Actor on behalf of Rufus
Sewell: Rufus has got an extraordinary dexterity, quickness, nimbleness to the point
where you know if you say in one moment you have to be absolutely believably a
Czechoslovakian, and the next you must have no trace of an accent you will never
have a problem. He relishes that sort of dexterity, but he is extraordinarily truthful,
very hard on himself. He was wonderful throughout the process, I mean I love him very much
so it was a delight when he said yes, and we had just terrific fun throughout.
Sewell dictated if-needed acceptance remarks to Nunn over
the phone, which Nunn faithfully read editing out only those relating to the director
bloke." Sewell recalled he had a great opportunity in the theatre
when Tom (Stoppard) and Trevor cast me in Arcadia when I was first starting
out, but hed come to realise during his career that those opportunities were
rare. However, he said, another came in the form of Stoppards Rock n
Roll and he wanted to thank Tom Stoppard on my knees for letting him do
it. He also praised all of his fellow cast members, including Sinead Cusack, who
every night cast her spell that I just had to wander into. And he credited the
Royal Court for making Tom Stoppard a Royal Court writer at last."

AMAZING GRACE

Thomas Clarkson
"Amazing Grace" is a film about the abolition of slavery in England. The cast
includes Rufus in the role of Thomas Clarkson, Ioan Gruffudd as William
Wilberforce, Albert Finney as John Newton, and Michael Gambon as Lord Fox.
Among the more valuable players is Rufus Sewell as Thomas Clarkson, a
reformer whose passion seems to tip into zealotry when he speaks about the French
Revolution; you half expect him to pull on some wellies so he can wade through the blue
blood about to spill over the Place de la Concorde.

Prince Leopold |
|
|
"....Sewell is however the most
remarkable of the three (including Edward Norton and Paul Giamatti), maintaining a quiet
air of menace about him that is shattered by the occasional explosion of emotion.
Hopefully the role of the Prince will be a springboard for larger parts......"
